How you can help

There are lots of ways to get involved in the project, as a Volunteer, Donor or Ambassador.

Volunteers

‘I’ve gained experience of interacting warmly with new people, doing something completely unlike the rest of my weekly activities. It’s really special and reminds me that I enjoy talking with people who are very different to me.’

Furry Tales wouldn’t exist without our team of enthusiastic and empathic volunteers. If you’re interested in working with people of all ages, swapping stories and combating social isolation through promoting a connection to animals and nature, then you’re right for our team. Previous experience with animals or in the health and wellbeing sector isn’t essential, though it’s great if you already have an understanding of these areas. You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer.

What will I be expected to do?

Volunteers arrive at the Farm before the session, help prepare props and equipment, select and healthcheck the animals and have a briefing on the expected group. In sessions, volunteers are expected to facilitate interaction between participants, help with handling and observation of animals, and cooperate with other volunteers to ensure participant needs are met. We tend to work with vulnerable adults, mostly aged 60+, so volunteers have to be friendly and adaptable, with excellent communication skills.

When can I volunteer?

Wednesday mornings and afternoons: Outreach sessions in local residential care facilities. You must be able to commit for a block of 6 consecutive weeks.

Friday afternoons: Onsite sessions at Stepney City Farm. We ask for a minimum commitment of once a month.

If you’re not available at these times, but would like to help out in another way, we invite you to attend Stepney City Farm’s Open Volunteer sessions. They’re a great way to get to know the Farm, meet all the wonderful animals and enjoy being outdoors. Anyone can come along, just turn up on the day.

How do I apply?
  1. Read our Volunteer Procedure
  2. Complete the Application Form
  3. Complete the Equal Opportunities form
  4. Return both of the above to furrytales@stepneycityfarm.org
  5. Complete the Online Induction

Donors

The project relies on donations and grants to operate. If you would like to donate to Furry Tales, either as a one-off or a regular payment, you can do so via Stepney City Farm’s Make A Donation. Just make sure you email us with details of your donation, stating clearly that you wish it to go towards FURRY TALES.

Ambassadors

Furry Tales always needs people to spread the word of the important work we do and promote the needs of the fascinating individuals we work with. You can do this by following us on Twitter, sharing our website with others and helping us fundraise. If you’d like to become an official Furry Tales Ambassador (and wear the badge of honour!), please get in touch.
